What the Heck is HYGGE and Why is it Trending? Farmer's Almanac Explains

As Farmer's Almanac points out:

"In winter, the weather can be cold and grey, and the dark mornings and evenings may have you dreaming of warmer and brighter months. If you are feeling the chill and blues of the season, then a dose of hygge may be in order."

"But what is it, how do you pronounce it, and why is it trending?

Hygge (pronounced “hoo-geh”) is a Danish concept of taking pleasure in everyday things, simplifying life, and creating coziness in the home. It encourages you to savor the good moments and foster meaningful relationships, while relaxing and indulging. The word derives from an old Norwegian term, hugga, meaning “to comfort” or “to console,” and while there is no literal translation in English (the closest is “hug”), it’s a mindset that has helped sustain the people of Denmark through long, chilly winters — Danes rank as one of the happiest people on the planet."

The concept has increased in popularity — there are several books that recently came out on the topic, with more reportedly to come. In fact, one of the Oxford Dictionary’s finalists for 2016 Word of the YeAR.

HOW TO ADOPT THE HYGGE WAY OF LIFE FOR HEALTH AND HAPPINESS

Hygge is a Danish word and isn’t really a tangible thing. It’s not here or there. It’s in the atmosphere one creates at home and it is a very old concept from Denmark and surrounding areas.

ACCORDING TO THE GUARDIAN:

“Nine books were published in 2016 featuring the Danish concept of hygge in their title. Hygge is the big new wellness trend, here with scented candles and wool socks. It is usually claimed there is no English word for the Danes’ uncanny ability to make any situation – be it family get-together, traffic jam, or failed climate conference – cozy. The Danes are very, very good at keeping things cozy. Like Hobbits. Or aunties. It is their superpower.”

HYGGE HOME

I am thrilled to say that I have a Hygge Home. I love having a Hygge Home more than anything else in the entire world. Yes, even more than chocolate or wine! It is one of the ways I’ve created a cozy atmosphere around me for decades. I just didn’t know it had a name until now!

I came across Hygee Home on Facebook just after Thanksgiving and have been wanting to share this with our readers for some time so I’m really excited about this post!

"Hygge only requires a conscious appreciation, a certain slowness, and the ability to not just be present – but recognize and enjoy the present."
